Average Net Worth in India: What the Official Data Shows

The most reliable source on Indian household wealth is the government's All India Debt & Investment Survey (AIDIS). Here is what it found, how to read it, and why the "net worth by age in India" tables you see online are mostly guesswork.

The short answer

According to the AIDIS 2019, the average Indian household owned assets worth ₹15.9 Lakh in rural India and ₹27.2 Lakh in urban India, as on 30 June 2018. Average debt was ₹59,748 per rural household and ₹1,20,336 per urban household. Subtracting one from the other gives an average household net worth of roughly ₹15.3 Lakh (rural) and ₹26.0 Lakh (urban). These are household figures, not per person, and they are averages, which the wealthiest households pull upward.

By type of household

The survey also splits households by occupation. In rural India, cultivator households averaged ₹22,07,257 in assets against ₹7,85,063 for non-cultivator households. In urban India, self-employed households averaged ₹41,51,226 against ₹22,10,707 for other households, a group that includes most salaried families.

What Indian household wealth is made of

The most striking finding is how little of it is financial. Land and buildings made up about 91% of the value of rural household assets (land 69%, buildings 22%), with deposits at 5%. In urban India, land was about 49% and buildings 38%, so property was roughly 87% of the total, with deposits at 9%. The average urban household's financial assets, at ₹2.5 Lakh, were less than a tenth of its total assets.

This matters if you're comparing yourself to the average. A salaried urban household with ₹20 Lakh in mutual funds, EPF and PPF but no property can look "below average" on the total, while holding far more financial wealth than the typical household does.

Average net worth by age in India

There is no widely published official table of net worth by age for India. The AIDIS press note reports wealth by household, by rural or urban sector and by occupation, not by the age of the earner. Most "net worth by age in India" charts online come from one of three places:

  • US data converted to rupees, usually from the US Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances. US incomes, home prices and retirement systems differ too much for this to say anything about India.
  • Surveys of a single platform's users, which describe that app's customers, not the country.
  • Rules of thumb presented as data.

The best-known rule of thumb comes from Thomas Stanley and William Danko's book The Millionaire Next Door (1996). Their benchmark is age × annual pre-tax income ÷ 10. A 35-year-old earning ₹18 Lakh a year would aim for about ₹63 Lakh. Treat it as a rough benchmark from US research, not an Indian standard. It suits people who have had steady earnings for many years and says little for anyone early in their career.

A more useful comparison is with yourself. Your net worth today against twelve months ago tells you more than any national average, because it reflects your income, your city and your obligations.

How much net worth is considered rich in India?

There is no official threshold. The AIDIS data gives some context: an urban household with net worth well above ₹26 Lakh (2018 values) was above the average, and because averages are pulled up by the wealthiest households, well above the typical household too. Beyond that, "rich" depends on your city, family size and obligations. A crore in a metro with a home loan and dependent parents is a very different position from a crore with no debt in a smaller town.

Reading these numbers carefully

  • Household, not individual. A household of five and a single person living alone count as one each.
  • Average, not median. A few very wealthy households raise the average, so most households sit below it.
  • 2018 values. Property prices, gold and markets have all moved since 30 June 2018. Don't inflate the numbers by a guessed rate and treat the result as fact.
  • Self-reported. Survey respondents value their own land and buildings, and financial assets tend to be under-reported in household surveys.

Working out where you stand

To compare yourself honestly, calculate your own figure the same way: everything you own at today's value, minus everything you owe. The net worth calculator does it in your browser, and how to calculate your net worth in India explains each line. Then record it every month, in the Excel template or in Finworthly, so the comparison that actually matters (you against your past self) builds up over time. If you would rather use an app, how to choose a net worth tracker for India sets out the options.

Track your own number, not the national average

Finworthly is a net worth tracker for Indian households. You enter the values, it keeps the month-by-month history. No bank logins.
